Get Ready Overland, June 9th is Busy!!
Overland is about to have a very busy Saturday. There are a host of events coming up this Saturday. The following is a list of those events so that you can hopefully plan your day and evening as to not miss any of them:
The Overland Historical Society will be holding a huge Rummage sale on Saturday, June 9th, 2007 starting at 8:00AM at the Historic Log Cabin site (9711 Lackland Road). This is going to be a big one folks so all you garage sale junkies and curb side archaeologists out there should run on over and get your fix.
There will be a kids fishing Tournament on Saturday, June 9th, 2007 from 9:00AM to 11:00AM at the Wild Acres Park Lake (10400 Midland Blvd). There will be great prizes for the winners in three different age groups so make sure to register your child for the tournament at Overland Hardware (2520 Woodson Road) today!
The Overland Business Association will be holding a business expo with many local companies, churches and organizations to meet on Saturday, June 9th, 2007 from 10:00AM to 2:00PM at the Wild Acres Seminary gym (2500 Ashby Road). There will be Live Music, BBQ and more. The Overland Historic Society will also be giving tours of the Seminary property Mansion for all those interested in taking a walk through the past.
The Overland Lions Club will be holding a fund raiser for Kaysa O'Brien (currently battling cancer) in the form of a Rock, Paper, Scissors Tournament at Lion's Hall (2358 Lackland Road) on Saturday, June 9th, 2007 from 3:00PM to 9:00PM. Yes, it really is that game you played as a kid and there are even going to be cash prizes for the winners! The cost of the tournament is $10.00 per person but the field will be limited to 64 players so get there early. The BBQ costs $25.00 a person and that includes admission, beer, soda, & BBQ (remember to save room for Skeeter's). There will be music, dancing, raffles and a whole lot more! Skeeter's Frozen Custard (9622 Lackland Rd), an Overland Institution, will be holding a 20th anniversary celebration on Saturday, June 9th, 2007 from 6:00PM to 8:00PM. There will be a clown, a magician and a fire truck from Community there for kids. They also plan to announce two new concrete flavors that evening! If this announcement makes you feel old, rest assured, you're not the only one. Whatever else you do in Overland on the 9th, make sure to stop by Skeeter's because everything is better with frozen custard.
OK Overland, starting getting your plans in order as you have a lot of running around coming this weekend. I fully expect to spend Sunday recovering from eating way too much throughout the day Saturday (and I seriously doubt I'll be alone in this).
If I missed anything, or if you have something to add about these events please feel free to take advantage of the comments and tell us all about it.

Can't they spread this stuff out?
I guess it is good for people who are coming in from outside of Overland. It makes it seems as if Overland is a real happening, hoppin' place--if only for one day.
I know, Crazy weekend, should keep us real busy. Hey, and it does make Overland look like a happenin' place doesn't it. :-)
Part of the of the reason for this is that the Discover Overland Event and the Fishing Derby had to be moved due to scheduling conflicts.
However, the bulk of the problem may be that many of our local groups don't know what the others are doing until it's too late.
I am hoping to address that second possibility with the next generation of the Overland Examiner. We agreed to move forward with a professional design company today. One of the components of Phase One is a great online calendar option. If all goes well we hope to have OE 2.0 online before the election in August.
