Election Results

According to the following information from the St. Louis County Board of Elections, the Recall of Mayor Ann Purzner succeeded by a nearly 3-1 margin. The final results for the four Council elections in Overland appear to be in as well. Though, earlier reports this evening showed Michael Oakes ahead in Ward 3, It now appears that Peggy Keller has won that election. The results in the other elections have followed the midday & absentee numbers with Eedie Cuminale winning Ward 1, Mary Beth Conlon winning Ward 2 and Tim Jones winning Ward 3.

Turn out was great this year (though it could always be better). There were 4337 votes cast on the Recall issue alone. That is about 1000 votes above the total votes cast in last year's Mayoral election. Thank you all for geting out to vote!

The following are the election results as posted by the St. Louis County Board of Elections (link):

You cannot see the road ahead of you if you won't take your eyes off the rearview mirror. For Overland to succeed we need to focus on the future

Not sure about this Peggy Keller thing!

I thought Prop R got passed?

Joe, I agree, I fear for Ward 3 with Owensby and Keller at the helm. We can only hope that the ORT didn't corrupt Keller too much and she starts thinking for herself and doing what's best for the residents of Ward 3 and Overland. Keller's campaign was full of the ORT sleaze from days of yore. Peggy please wake up and smell the stench of the ORT.

Prop R failed as it needed 57% of the vote to pass. However, I am amazed that it came so close when you consider the high County Re-Assessments that were sent out just a week or so before it was passed.

Anyway here is the County Election Board info on Prop R:

PROPOSITION R
RITENOUR SCHOOL DISTRICT
BONDS - CAPITAL IMPROV
(57.15% NEEDED)
(VOTE FOR ) 1
(WITH 50 OF 50 PRECINCTS COUNTED)
YES . . . 3,951 (50.95%)
NO. . . . 3,804 (49.05%)

Michael Oakes has been very gracious in defeat (though I expected nothing less). He was running a uphill battle in Ward 3 but he did it with class and a positive message. The race was close enough to give those in Ward 3 who do not support Councilman Owensby and others hope that in time (perhaps 2008) they will be able to make a positive change in there Ward.

Great Job Michael! I hope to see you running again in the future.

Thank you for the Prop R information, Sailor.

I agree, Michael Oakes ran an honest and sincere campaign. It's very sad, Ward 3 residents really lost out, not having Michael on the Council. He lost by a very small margin, it just goes to show once again, you must get out and VOTE. I hope he runs in 2008 too!

It was a great day for Overland...

Thankfully Prop R failed...

I'm glad there were others out there that didn't buy into the fallacy that public education was worth more extorted tax dollars ...

Well, juandos we can agree to disagree I guess on how schools impact their communities.

I agree that money is certainly not the answer to all problems in schools, government or anywhere else. However, this proposition was about bringing something new not just to the school, but to our community (with a small part of the bond going to building a facility for a program that the district already has and is currently renting space for).

However, That issue is really not one I choose to debate. Frankly, as I have admitted from the start, I am likely a bit biased on school issues since I am a parent of a child just starting out in the local school system, and so many in my family are part-time musicians, singers, etc (as well as Ritenour grads for the most part).

Interesting Note:

Rumor has it that Roland Lettner submitted his resignation this morning. No confirmation as yet.

So, did anyone else notice that our 'friend" Mark Brown lost his council seat in St. Charles? Only fitting that he should go the way of his cronies. Also, hang in there Mike, for all you've done for us, we'll back you even more next time. Until then, it sucks to live in ward 3.

Hello Sailor:

Well I can definitely understand and almost appreciate your viewpoint on public school education...

Thirty years ago I wouldn't have dreamt of saying something like that but alas, times have changed and public schools with it...

There are some articles today in the post metro about Overland & St. Charles you might enjoy reading.

Thanks twolayer, Here's a new article from the St louis Post Dispatch: Purzner won't fight recall.

I hope the article is accurate. Overland needs to move forward.

Councilman Knode and Mayor Purzner removed all of the text from the scrolling text boxes on their web sites, leaving a short nice message in it's place.

I would like to thank them for that, and say that I hope they will be taking down their edited videos and audio files and the like soon as well. It really doesn't matter if they come down, as most people realize what they are, but it sure would be a gracious thing to do.

Also, it is typical that after a political race is decided, the person who lost contacts the person who won to congratulates them.

In Mayor Purzner's case she was gracious in her statements to the reporters, and since she was not running against another person that seems more than appropriate. Thank you Mayor Purzner, I wish you all the best.

In Councilman Knode's case however, it would be nice if he'd contact his opponent and congratulate her on her victory. Whether he does this or not I would like Councilman Knode and his family to know that I wish them all the best.

What everyone needs to remember is that though people oppose each other politically, the folks on both sides are still people. I've always felt it's best to treat others like you would like to be treated (though we all have our weak moments on occasion).

Remember you sunglasses when you look to the future Overland.....it's a bright one.

For those that did not prevail in their elections we would just like to say don't give up. If you ran a clean, positive campaign, the residents we remember you fondly should you choose to run again in the future.
